Pregnancy and Childbirth

My passion for childbirth began as a child after watching my mother birth my four younger siblings.  My mother believed in natural childbirth and chose birthing centers for all five of her deliveries.  Thanks to this choice, I witnessed each birth and cut several umbilical cords as a young child.  I found the experience fascinating, and completely normal!

I grew up to become a labor and delivery RN (2004) where I assisted hundreds of women through childbirth and their immediate postpartum period.  I loved my job and nearly cried at the beauty of every single delivery!  In 2007, I left the world of nursing when I gave birth to my son who was born naturally in a birthing center.evan baby

I welcomed two more children in 2010 and 2013 via natural water births.  My third child was born at home.

These experiences changed my life and left me with a longing to help other women experience the beauty of an empowered birth experience.  My desire to become a doula was born in order to help women achieve their ideal birth, no matter the setting, no matter the type of birth.  I believe that women should be educated in their birthing options, and then supported throughout the process!  The best choice for me might not be the best choice for you and that is ok.  Every woman is unique but the important thing is that she is given honest, complete information and allowed to birth safely, as she desires.

In addition to my experience and training, my faith plays a strong role in my position as a doula!  I believe we were all intelligently created by a loving God!  I believe that it is plan for us to live a happy and healthy life, that He has plans for our future! (Jeremiah 29:11)  I also believe that the words of our mouths and thoughts in our minds have a tremendous influence on our lives and I believe in the power of prayer.  Although I am happy to serve clients of any, or no faith or religious background, and do so without judgement, for my Christian sisters, I offer you a spirit-filled doula who will pray throughout the process!  In this life, we can have what we say, and if we have faith as a grain of mustard seed, we can move mountains.  Throughout your pregnancy, I will work with you to shift your way of thinking and gain trust in your body, faith that God will see you through this, and courage to face the unknown with the Lord by your side!

In addition to my previous work experience in L&D, I became CAPPA trained in 2015 and am currently working to complete my official CAPPA certification.

Why Should You Hire a Doula?

So what is a doula anyway?

a woman who is trained to assist another woman during childbirth and who may provide support to the family after the baby is born.

That’s the simple definition of it, but to get a real idea of what a doula does, it’s best to read a first-hand account. Check out my friend Leah’s answer to this:  How I Learned The Value of a Doula

So why hire a doula?

  • As a doula, I provide emotional and physical support.  Sometimes you just want to know that the person standing beside you has been through labor and made it out the other side.  I’ve been in your shoes and survived!  And not only that, I have supported other women through their labors as well.  I am there for YOU!
  • As a doula, I am well versed in physical comfort measures.  If you choose a natural birth, I can help with positioning, accupressure, massage and other tricks to help lessen the pain and help you cope through each contraction.  But remember, I am there to support you through whatever birth you choose and if natural is not your “cup of tea”, I will make sure you are supported through the process of getting an epidural or whatever pain management technique you choose.
  • As a doula, I provide informational support in our prenatal visits.  We will discuss the risks and benefits of various interventions and procedures that may occur during birth.  I will help you to create a birth plan so your wishes are known to the entire medical team.  I will discuss breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact and the importance of bonding after birth.  I will provide you with recommended reading lists and help you connect with childbirth preparation classes if desired.  The goal is for you to become educated on your choices so you can make the best decision for you and your baby!
  • As a doula, I do NOT replace the partner!  My role is to not only support the laboring mother, but also the father as well.  I understand that dad’s come to pregnancy and birth with many different levels of comfort, concerns and desires for involvement in the birth process.  Please know this, my role is NOT to replace you during the birth experience!  My role is to support you BOTH in any way that you need me to be involved.  If your desire is to be the primary labor coach, then I can be there to give additional suggestions and support as needed.  If the idea of birth terrifies you and you have absolutely no idea what to do or expect, I can play a more active role.  I can give you suggestions to help her during labor and show you different things to do, we can work together, or I can provide the majority of support.  Whatever you need me to do, I am there to help!My personal philosophy on birth is that your child was created in love, during an intimate time between the two of you, and birth should respect that.  Our society likes to trivialize birth and the joke is often made on tv of dads waiting in the waiting room, or terrified by the bedside as the mother screams and curses his very existence.  I do not believe that birth has to be this way.  No one knows her better than you, and when labor gets intense, she will likely look to you for comfort before her midwife, doula, doctor, or anyone else in the room.  That may seem like a tremendous responsibility on your shoulders, having never been in labor yourself, but please know that you are not alone!  This is exactly why you have a doula and I will do everything I can to support YOU as well as the mother as she brings your child into this world.

Sarah A. (Birth of son in March 2012)

Amber has been a major role in my support system since I became pregnant.  She is so wise and compassionate especially when it comes to bearing children!

Kelly N. (Birth of son in July 2014 and May 2016) *REPEAT CLIENT!*

Amber was such an encouragement to throughout the entire labor process. I was induced at 42 weeks and she stayed with me during the entire induction process. Although I was in the hospital for two days, she was faithful to encourage me and remind me of my goal of a natural, unmedicated birth. She helped me to stay relaxed and cheered me on when it was time to push. She also gave my husband ideas on how to soothe my pain and my fears. Without Amber’s guidance, I would have lost sight of my birth goals. I can’t imagine giving birth without her by my side!

Amanda M. (Birth of daughter in September 2015)

To all those that are currently pregnant, Amber is one of the major reasons I was so confident in knowing that I could deliver my child naturally. She was a continuous voice of support and reassurance that my body would carry me through labor the way its supposed to. Not only is she vastly knowledgeable about pregnancy and birth through her own experiences but through study. There was one point in my labor when I thought I couldn’t do it but she made me feel strong and she got me through with just her encouraging words. If you chose to have Amber as your Doula, you will not regret that decision! Thank you a million times over and over again, Amber. Every time I look at my sweet baby girl I think of you and your amazing energy and hope you rubbed some off on her when you held her for the first time.
